The Raggle Taggle Gypsies
Originally a Scottish ballad, 'The Raggle Taggle Gypsies' was also collected in Devonshire and Ireland. In the Devon version the lady was abducted by the Lord of Cassil and forced to marry against her will. The real event behind the original concerns the execution in 1624 of Scottish gypsy chieftain Jonny Faa, he ended up on the gallows while the lady was found again by her husband. All later versions allow the lady to take off with the gypsies never to be seen again.
